Some interesting news came out today while reading about the auto industry. As you have probably read or heard at some point, the Big Three (Chrysler, General Motors, and Ford) are struggling with Chrysler and General Motors potentially having to file for bankruptcy or receive immediate help from the government just to survive. The Bush administration is thinking about bankruptcy for the two companies as a possible alternative but within an orderly fashion (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Bush-considering-orderly-auto-apf-13870003.html). Three major auto suppliers have already filed for bankruptcy. What this then leads to is wondering what will happen if you work in the auto industry or within a related industry which counts on the auto business for parts of your sales. The auto industry has roots in around two million jobs (look at this map CNN has provided: http://money.cnn.com/news/specials/storysupplement/stateautoworkers/).
This just shows you that a recession can affect any job. You may be the most effective person at your job but if there is no demand for your company’s services, you will find yourself laid off.
All of this is used to simply point out that everyone can be vulnerable from any recession. Most people do not have any sort of savings so that if they lose their job, they can not survive without having to declare bankruptcy. Having a home based business can help you in a couple of different ways. It allows you to diversify your income. If you are tied to the auto industry in any way, you may be sweating bullets as you wonder where your next paycheck will come from.
A home based business could allow you to build that savings cushion so that you could sleep better at night. You can have an income which is not reliant upon one company but rather upon many customers. If you lose a customer here and there, that hurts your income stream but you can attract more clients through your own hard work. This allows you to have less stress during a recession. This completely ties back into the auto industry or any concerns you have about the economy these days.
It is a good question and probably can give you a better idea on what qualities you may want to develop within yourself as you develop your own business. Any person can start a business but there are certain qualities we can see within people who make their businesses successful. This post is going to look at a couple of these qualities in detail along with an interesting argument about entrepreneurs.
One of the most important characteristics is the inner drive to be successful. Whenever you are looking at start a business, you have push yourself. There will be struggles and your inner drive will push you through these times so that you don’t give up. The second characteristic I want to talk about is openness to change. Whenever you are becoming successful in business, you need to develop a certain skill set. If you are open to change and developing your skills, you will give yourself a better chance at succeeding. You will find where you are strong and weak and developing those weak skills can make you a better person and entrepreneur? Here is a good article which will look at more of these qualities that are found in entrepreneurs: http://www.woopidoo.com/articles/geimure/entrepreneur-article.htm.
In this article, the author argues that entrepreneurs are born and not made: http://www.billda.com/what-makes-a-successful-entrepreneur. It is an interesting argument but the end point that is to be stressed here is that you can make yourself into anything you want to. If you take the time to develop certain qualities as shown in the previous article, you have as much chance to succeed as anyone.
A home based business reduces the risk that you will have to incur when starting a business. You can keep your day job while working to build your home based business. The second article is meant to get you thinking. No one can tell you what you can or cannot do but it is interesting to think that some characteristics we are born with. You have some of all of these characteristics and it is your ability to change and develop. That was one of the qualities talked about in the first half of the blog post.
If you are fortunate enough to have a job right now, you probably have not seen your income increase to that great of an extent. You may do everything right but a company may not be able to pay you more money simply because the amount of money to pay for salary increases is not there. This probably does happen to many people and much more so these days as companies are trying to batten down the hatches with the recession going on.
You must look at increasing your income every year when possible. You may make the same amount as you did last year as a gross revenue but your money does not go as far. Inflation occurs every year and it was very high last year. The article I will point to is a little bit out of date but can give you the general idea: http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/0319/p01s01-usec.html. Think about what happened with gas going over four dollars this year. Did you have as much money to do the things you could do or did you find you were struggling to make ends meet? This probably came as a result of higher prices. Your income was not or is not increasing at the same pace as inflation. If you want to see even more proof, take a look at this document put out by the UK government. You can read as much as you want to see how this recession is really hurting you: http://www.lowpay.gov.uk/lowpay/research/pdf/t0001EDS.pdf.
One way that you can increase your income potentially is to start a home based business. You may have read a great deal about this and thought about starting a home based business. You may have had some misgivings about going down this route. If you are at all concerned about this, take a look at the following article: http://www.officialares.com/general/benefits-of-home-based-business/. It talks about the sales that home based businesses generate every year among other things.
It’s a good question to ask these days because of the bailouts of several large banks and the struggles the automakers are having. You may have lost your job, know someone who has lost a job, or have worried about losing your own job. Unemployment is the highest it has been in quite a few years.
There is a great deal of bad news that was mentioned simply in that first paragraph. It is good to come back to the question that started this blog post. How is the economy affecting you? You can take this question in stride or you can then turn it around from there: how will you let another bad economy affect you? If you ask the question in that sort of tone, you are being much more proactive. Let’s think through this a bit. If you are worried about your job and are concerned about your company, you need to find some way to recession proof your income. One of the best ways to do that is through starting your own business.
Your own business is something that you should look into. If you build a good business and take care of your customers, a recession will not affect you as strongly as someone with a job at a struggling company. You will lose some customers potentially because people may buy less but you have many streams of income because of many customers as opposed to one stream of income which would be your job. A recession could be a great opportunity as well because this is when many other businesses stop marketing and advertising. You could pick up more customers or prospects because of their decision so that you could actually increase your business’s revenues and your income.
Think about that when you are looking into how the economy is affecting you. Do you want to have more sleepless nights the next time something like this happens or wouldn’t it be better if you could simply avoid the whole question by having your own business?
Here is an idea for a business you may want to start from home.

Before you can have a successful home based business, you must first possess 3 "intangibles." These are things that must come from WITHIN you.
===> Intangible 1 <===
First,you must have a strong WHY.
Why MUST you have a successful home business? What is driving you? What is it that you CAN'T have in your life anymore and/or what is it that you absolutely MUST HAVE now?
For me, I couldn't stand working 12+ hours a day anymore and missing the experience of my children growing up. I also absolutely HAD TO HAVE the freedom of being able to control my life and finances through a little box (laptop computer) that I could carry with me anywhere in the world and not be tied to anyone's time pressures or demands but my own. That was my carrot and my stick. I felt a great pain deep in my gut of missing out on my children's lives and the incredible freedom that succeeding in a home based business would provide for me. I found my why. You MUST find yours.
===> Intangible 2 <===
You must BELIEVE that it is possible.
If you don't believe that it's POSSIBLE for you to have a successful home based business or make your living from home, you won't. It's that simple.
For me, figuring out that it was possible was just a matter of realizing that many other people were ALREADY making great money working from home. If they could do it, I could too. It would just be a matter of figuring out what those people were doing and then adapting it to my situation.
There is no shortage of undeniable PROOF that people (millions of them) are making money working from home. Just get online and do some research and you'll find countless testimonials and stories of REAL PEOPLE making real money on the Internet. Or head to your local bookstore and you'll find the same documented evidence of this fact. Truth is, it's getting easier and easier to make money with your own home based business.
I've always said that "affiliate marketing" (a simple way to make money from home) is the job of the future. In the old days, you had to go to a potential employer, apply for the position and hope for the best. Now you can simply go to any company you want, fill out their affiliate application and start work immediately. Affiliates are the new working class. In fact, making money with affiliate programs or making your living on the Internet is WAY MORE than possible. It is pretty much (or will be soon enough) unavoidable now. Affiliate marketing is the "job" of the future that's already here TODAY.
===> Intangible 3 <===
You must be willing to MAKE THE LEAP.
Ready, FIRE, then aim... This is the operating philosophy you MUST adopt to succeed with a home based business.
That's backwards for most people who like to aim before they fire. The fact is that home based business success is a moving target... The only thing constant about it is change. You need to stop analyzing the game and simply jump into it. You can't learn from the outside... You have to be *IN THE RING* to truly understand and profit from it. In fact, this is a business where you can truly be earning WHILE you're still learning...
The lesson here is that you will never really be READY to start a home based business. You simply have to start one. It's like having children... You're never really ready, but when it happens you adapt and grow and therefore you succeed. This is what I call: "Making the Leap"!
The good news is that the cost of failure with having your own home based business is very small. In the "brick and mortar" world you need to evaluate things very carefully before you decide to open up a business. It's almost always necessary to invest thousands of dollars to get an offline business off the ground. However, on the Internet you can often start a successful business for less than $100. The Plug-In Profit Site is a great example of this where you can get your own money-making site setup free within 24 hours: http://www.PlugInProfitSite.com/main-27241
You simply need get IN THE GAME... Each moment that you stay "out there," you're wasting valuable time that you could be learning and skills necessary to build a successful home based business. In fact, if you're not in the game yet, you're ALREADY behind the times... Make the leap to starting and building a successful home business TODAY!
